CASE STUDY

The Sage, Gateshead

We replaced the house lighting for two auditoriums within the Sage Gateshead, one of the UK’s leading music venues.

Project Details

Completion: August 2011
Location: Sage, Gateshead
Client: Gateshead Council
Kit List
  • Prolyte Catwalk Truss
  • TDE High-Power
  • RGB LED Strip
The client needed a replacement for an existing tungsten-based lighting system in two performance halls. This old system was proving expensive and unreliable.

The project required our team to overcome a number of significant technical challenges and to work to a tight deadline and with a restricted budget. The success of this project shows that our team has the contacts and skills to deliver highly complex assignments of this type.

What we did
We liaised closely with the client to determine the exact requirements of the project. We then conducted several on-site trials of potential equipment to see how they would work in-situ.

We decided an LED-based system as a solution. This technology was chosen due to its long life, low running costs and low heat output. Once the equipment choice had been made we undertook a ‘test’ installation.

Our in-house rigging expert, Craig Collin, designed an access method for high-level fittings that minimised cost and disruption. This system used Prolyte Catwalk Truss and hoists.

We brought in a large team to carry out the final installation. We then programmed the new equipment and integrated it into the ETC Dimming & Control system we’d previously installed at the venue.

Key challenges
The new product had to fit neatly and inconspicuously within an existing C-section extruded housing. This had to be done so that there was no interference with beam angles.

Balcony fronts and the underside of ceiling panels (which act as light reflectors) had to retain their original aesthetics and appearance. This meant that colour temperature was critical. Typical LED sources were not suitable, as they were not ‘warm’ enough.

The project had to be completed to a tight timescale - there was no possibility of not meeting the completion date.

Access to the higher balcony levels was difficult as we could not remove the seats across the entire auditorium (which would have been costly in terms of time and money).

Results
We worked closely with the client to develop and deliver a custom-made solution to an extremely tight and complex set of requirements. The finished system provides the flexibility, long life, low running costs and low heat output that the client asked for.
