Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal

We helped one of Britain’s leading charities launch its most important annual fund-raising campaign by turning two of Edinburgh’s most famous landmarks yellow.

Project Details

Completion: March 2011
Location: Edinburgh
Client: Marie Curie Cancer Care
Kit List

Equipment and systems used for this event included:
  • 12 x Robe CitySkapes.
  • 6 x 400w HQI discharge.
  • 6 x 150w HQI discharge.
To publicize the launch of Marie Curie Cancer Care’s 2011 Great Daffodil Appeal, our team lit the columns of the National Monument on Calton Hill and Queen Victoria's statue on the Royal Scottish Academy. The project highlights our expertise at this kind of work, gained on projects such as Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations.

We were approached by Marie Curie because of our previous work in festival lighting and charity fundraising.

The brief was to illuminate the two monuments in the Marie Curie brand colour. We responded with a well-produced lighting scheme that created a dramatic impact and illuminated both buildings on cue at exactly the same time.

To keep power consumption down we used ROBE CitySkape LED fixtures.

One technical challenge was getting a good colour match for Marie Curie’s yellow. We also only had a short time to setup our equipment. Despite this everything went without a hitch.

Results
The Marie Curie illuminations generated a lot of publicity for its appeal, including a photograph in The Scotsman newspaper captioned “Golden fun: Monument lit up for charity launch.”

Feedback
“Black Light have been extremely supportive in lending us their time and expertise to help light up Edinburgh in yellow for the launch of Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal,” said Harry Hussain, Associate Director, Weber Shandwick Scotland who was in charge of the publicity drive for the Appeal. “They did a fantastic job illuminating the National Monument on Calton Hill and the National Gallery on the Mound, both of which helped to generate coverage for the Charity’s Appeal and, more importantly, raise awareness amongst the public.”

The Event
Each March the Great Daffodil Appeal helps raise awareness about the work of Marie Curie Nurses. It also raises vital funds so that the charity can continue providing free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses.

The Edinburgh illuminations were a key part of a national ‘switch on’ for Marie Curie. This saw the illumination of iconic landmarks throughout the country: From Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower to Scotland’s Inverness Castle, famous places across the UK got the yellow treatment.
